Saint Paul de Vence Private Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, you'll meet your private guide at the pharmacy at the village entrance, where you'll hear the story of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, from its medieval origins through to its artistic golden age in the 20th century.
You'll then wander into the narrow cobbled streets, lined with stone houses, shaded little squares, artisan boutiques, and picturesque cafés. Along the way, you'll walk the village's remarkably well-preserved ramparts and bastions, dating back to the 16th century, when the village was fortified against attack. From up here, spectacular views open out over the La Cagne river valley, the Provençal countryside, and the Mediterranean beyond.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence has drawn artists since the 1920s, and you'll spend time among the galleries and studios that once attracted the likes of Chagall, Matisse, and Picasso, all of whom found inspiration here. Chagall was so taken with the place that he is buried in the village cemetery. Your guide will also point out the legendary Colombe d'Or, the hotel and restaurant where many of those artists stayed and which still holds original works they left behind.
You'll also stop at some of the village's most emblematic spots, including the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs with its frescoes, the Place du Jeu de Ballon, and the village fountain.
To finish, we'll stop at a local shop to sample some olive oil, tapenades, and other Provençal specialties.
Finally, the tour will come to an end after approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
